Shiners Newsletter Spring 2006.

Apologies for the lateness of the Spring letter but there has been very little to report.

One obituary we have received  news of is that Paddy O’Neill died in January following a heart attack. We think he was 75 years old. We have no further details as we did not hear of his death until March.

John Hewitt has informed me of the flag situation at the Arboretum. When he went to have a look round he found two of the flags in tatters and they were only suitable for the bin. Needless to say John was not pleased with the person in charge there so we have agreed that in future the flags will be removed in October and flown again from April, they were being left flying 365 days a year and they are far too expensive to be left up for that length of time. So if anyone visits the Arboretum in the winter months that is the reason why the flag will not be flying.

As you know the King’s Royal Hussars was granted the Freedom of the City of Winchester and there were a few 10th Royal Hussars represented, one being Trevor Weston who said it was a very good day and the regiment was very well turned out.

Had an email from Peter Hill who had been asked by a lady called Carol Lake for information on her father Victor Desmond Lake of Stafford who was in the 10th Hussars approximately 1948 in Iserlohn and HemerAmt in Germany. If anyone has photos of that time or know of him please contact Peter as Vic would like to revive memories of his time in the 10th and chat about old times. We sent an email to Mrs Lake and gave her the address and web-site of the King’s Royal Hussars museum.

Last year Tony Preston sent me the newsletter of the Aden Veterans Association, “The Dhow”. Since Swindon last year when Tony said a few words on the Association he has had several new members from the Shiners and he suggested we put the following article in the newsletter. This applies to all Veterans not only the Aden ones. Even I qualify, I had all my jabs for Aden but did not go!! For my sins I ended up teaching officers how to drive a tank. The article in the magazine is as follows:

“ Subscription to the British Veterans Recognition Card is an annually renewable membership offering a number of benefits.

Personal Recognition Card.

Access to Partners’ discounts.

Proof of eligibility for discounts abroad.

Regular newsletter with new offers and other Veterans issues.

Subscription to the British Veterans Recognition Card costs £25 for the first year (£15 joining fee and £10 annual subscription)

To continue membership for the second and subsequent years costs the annual subscription fee of £10.

For those over the age of 65 years, who wish to belong to the scheme, we will waive the initial joining fee of £15.

There are over 40 outlets in the scheme and as an example these are a few of the savings to be made: 50% off Dolland & Aitchison, 45% of all cross Channel with P&O, 18% off membership of the RAC, Hilton Hotels are giving 15% off, Brewers Fayre are giving two for the price of one meals.

These are just a few of the savings to be made as a member and upon joining you are supplied with a booklet with all the outlets taking part. For further information and an application form ring 0845 3003892”.

I am sure Tony would love to hear from anyone who wants to join.

As you know Swindon is only about 4 weeks away. Those intending to go please let Liz know. Harry Garlick is going so is Mick Cox, and I am also going. I have to explain to Harry why, when he took over my class of trainees and my tank at Catterick when we were D&M instructors the tank required a track change and why I hadn’t done it. It appears I am very deeply in the mire. After 44 years I thought he may have forgiven me. That is going to cost me a beer at least. My excuse is I did not have a rope for the sprocket!

Have just found out that we have located those we called “The James Brothers”. Remember them? They both ended up with the rank of Major. Jimmy lives in Dunfermline and the other brother lives in Germany. If anyone wants to contact them get in touch with John Hewitt.

Up to press Stockport ticket applications only reads 11 so please let us have some movement on that and please don’t forget the subs. We want another weekend as good as last year at Stockport.

Sorry it is a short letter but one could say ‘no news is good news’.

Please "Click" Here for 2006 Function Application Form when new window opens just "save or open" then print.

          Keep well, keep safe,

          Regards to all,
